City of Rocks (Camping & Climbing) April 30-June 1, 2018

I finally made it to one of the climbing meccas in the Utah-Idaho area! This was a great three day trip. Friday night, a friend and I drove up to the area and met some of his family there. We camped in the City of Rocks campground both nights. Our whole trip was completely focused on climbing with a little bouldering on the side.

Getting ready to dyno.

Friday night sunset.

After waking up Saturday morning and doing the usual morning camp routine, we got our gear together and headed out. We headed to Castle Rock and started out our morning on the Wounded Warrior Wall doing some easy warm up climbs. As the day progressed, we moved around the castle and did some multi-pitch routes. The weather was perfect and the climbing was exceptional.

We completely enjoyed ourselves that afternoon. I particularly enjoyed the Little Time and Big Time climbs on the South side of the castle. By mid-afternoon, we were worn out so we poked around for a while then headed back to camp for dinner. In the late evening a rain shower moved in, but quickly dissipated. The next morning, we decided to do a few more climbs. The day was colder than the previous day so most of us were feeling the urge to get heading back down south to warmer spring weather. I ended up leading this awesome 5.7 called Mystery Achievement that followed chicken heads all the way to the top.

Top roping after I lead the climb.

After our morning climbing escapade, we packed up camp and headed back to Utah. We took the long route home, driving across the Great Salt Lake desert and eventually ending up at the Spiral Jetty.

The rest of our drive went by quickly. Got home late Sunday afternoon and unpacked. City of Rocks was great. I would highly recommend it for climbers. I will be back to do some more climbing!

Hanging out.
